Don Maclennan, poet, playwright and much loved teacher of poetry, died after a long illness on 9 February. I was privileged to know him, to publish his work and to call him a friend. In my opinion Don’s literary antecedents were closer to the early Chinese poets than to the English language canon. His work was always spare and direct without unnecessary ornamentation. If you are intrigued by that illusive shade, the spirit of Zen, look no further than any one of Don’s many collections. This is from The Road to Kromdraai:
